Khumbu Climber - 17 Apr to 15 May '05

Written by Leader Deborah Laugharne, May 2005

The Spring Khumbu Climber expedition led by Deborah Laugharne and Dawa Tshering returned to Heathrow airport yesterday ending a fantastic month of generally stunning conditions and great climbing. All four team members reached new personal bests regarding altitude and enjoyed summitting on three peaks in the Khumbu Valley, Nagartsang Peak (5,083m), Pokalde (5,794m) and Island Peak (6,189m). The summitteers were Richard Apps, Andy Birrell, Anya Kleuver and Adrian Sweet.

Unfortunately, we were beaten by three days of bad weather on Lobuche East and descended from high camp at 5,350m in deep snow, after an 'interesting' night of heavy snow. Later that morning we were greeted by stunning views during a brief break in the weather between 6am and 8am for breakfast, overlooked by the beautiful Ama Dablam.

After crossing the Cho La, we descended to Gokyo to enjoy a couple of days exploring the views from the lakes over to Everest in beautifully clear conditions, a fantastic finale to the trip. We also enjoyed the luxuries of the Gokyo Resort Hotel! The team bonded very well and were a pleasure to lead throughout. Hopefully we will see you all on Bolivian Climber next year! Well done to everyone!

Deborah Laugharne, Expedition Leader.
