Are you ready for full Russian immersion?
Introduction
Here you will ski beautiful mountains, travel by train, hovercraft, ‘Soviet snow tank’, 6x6 and 8x8 trucks. You will visit remote towns and even remoter villages, communicating where possible with the locals and learning much about life in the Russian Arctic.Vorkuta is a hard place with a dark past. We will visit this coal mining town built and operated by slave labour from one of the largest and most notorious gulags in the Soviet Union. Not a place to linger we will quickly head back into the sub-Polar Urals for further skiing before taking a 36 hour train journey to the heart of Moscow. We then have time to visit the city and enjoy Saturday night there before flying home.
This year’s ‘Expect the Unexpected’.
What to expect
Day touring from the village of Harp in the Polar Urals then from the Erkussey Hut in the Sub-Polar Urals. Summits include the highest in the 2500km Ural Mountain chain, 1895m Mt Naroda. Lots of things Russian.Grade: 10B
