Khumbu Climber - 28 March to 25 April 2004

Written by Leader, April 2004

We were blessed with mostly good weather throughout the whole of this Khumbu Climber expedition, which I contribute to everyone going religiously around all the mani stones the correct way (well Lorien made sure we did). The only summit we had worse than perfect weather on was Pokalde, but at least we still had the views.

Pokalde Peak 5,800m (Climbed 7 April)
Jill Christer, Ben Couch, Andy Cramp, Stephen Ebbens, Lorien Kater, Nick Lyons, Chris Upson and Craig Yardley all made the summit. After a late start due to snow, we left high camp at 6 a.m. and summited at around 9 a.m. The conditions on the rocky ridge at the top were made quite tricky with all the extra snow, which people tackled fantastically.

Island Peak 6,189m (Climbed 10 April)
Jill Christer, Ben Couch, Andy Cramp, Stephen Ebbens, Lorien Kater, Nick Lyons, Chris Upson and Chris Yardley all stepped on to an unusually warm summit and an incredibly perfect day. After leaving high camp at 4 a.m. the last person to make the summit arrived at 10 a.m. We also had the summit virtually to ourselves, sharing it with only one other climber and with the weather so nice, we could enjoy the alpine vista without too much haste to descend.

Lobuje East 6,019m (Climbed 15 April)
Stephen Ebbens, Lorien Kater, Chris Upson and Craig Yardley all stepped once again onto a solitary and sunny summit, where the views are breathtaking. Having left high camp at 4 a.m., we were all on the summit by 9:30 a.m.

Whilst we were off on Lobuje, Jill Christer, Andy Cramp, Nick Lyons and Ben Couch opted to trek to Everest base camp and also to check out the fantastic views form Kala Pattar. Not to mention having lunch with Kenton Cool at base camp (who's leading the Jagged Globe Everest expedition this season).

Gokyo Ri 5,483m (Climbed 19 April)
Stephen Ebbens, Lorian Kater, Nick Lyons and Chris Upson climbed to the top of this view point to get one last look proper of the endless amazing Himalaya, before setting off back down the Khumbu. Chris, might I add, actually did this 3 times, twice running with a record time of 39mins up and 12mins down!

Might I also add that the previous day the whole group had walked up to the Fifth lake, which offered stunning views of Everest, Nuptse, Cho Oyu and many more mountains. A highly recommended walk for the views.
